Celebrating St Patrick’s day in Malta

St. Patrick’s Day is no longer just an Irish event. During recent years the celebrations of St. Patrick – people participating in the parades, singing and dancing to Irish music, making Irish jokes and Irish toasts – have gained tremendous popularity around the world,  including on Malta.

As the Irish would say, “On St. Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish so why not to join us?”

Indeed, following the success of the St. Patrick’s celebrations in the Maltese Capital City Valletta last year, the Irish Maltese Circle  with several other organisations has decided to join the forces to organise another great event on Sunday 16th March 2014 at 11:45.

The Parade will leave from the City Gate of Valletta.

World football freestyle champion Andrew Henderson in Malta

The skills of world renowned freestyle champion Andrew Henderson marry with the unique backdrop of the Valletta Grand Harbour. This video was shot on a warm bright day from the Gardjola Gardens in Sengela (Isla) under the watchful eye of the “gardjola” tower.

The gardens were planned by Grandmaster De La Sengle in 1551 with a lovely guard tower built on the tip of the bastions. The guard tower, ‘Il-gardjola’, has various symbols sculpted on in such as an eye, an ear and the crane bird, representing guardianship and observance protecting the Maltese shores.

The Traditional Carnival in Malta and Gozo

The traditional Carnival in Malta goes back hundreds of years. We find that already in the 16th century a jousting tournament was held as part of the celebrations. Maltese folk used to celebrate Carnival as did the Knights of St. John as from one week prior and up to Ash Wednesday. The origin of the name Carnival derives from the Italian phrase ‘Carne vale’, which means literally ‘meat is allowed’ due to the fact that during the forty days of lent, the consumption of meat was forbidden according to Roman Catholic religion. Therefore, Carnival was to be celebrated just prior to the fasting period in Roman Catholic countries.

Nowadays, Carnival is celebrated in numerous towns and villages but especially in Valletta, Floriana and Nadur Gozo. It is indeed a kind of explosion of colour in the way of decorated floats and costumes. Carnival serves also as means of merriment and a time when individuals also dress up in all sorts of weird or funny costume and just go out in the streets to join the fray.

WWII tunnels open to public

The World War II  tunnels beneath the Upper Barrakka in Malta’s Capital city, Valletta will be open to the public for the first time in years.

The tunnels that hosted a major strategic centre for the British forces during the war, have undergone restoration works. The works have returned to the public both the area that serrved as war headquarters and the interconnecting tunnels leading to the war-room.

While the winding underground passages were dug back in 1556, they were first used as strategic planning posts by the British in 1939. The dark, damp rooms include several corporal dormitories and even one used by the commander of the Royal Air Force.
